Application of CMC in Textile Printing and Dyeing Industry

In recent years, with the increasing demand for environmentally friendly and high-efficiency auxiliaries in the textile printing and dyeing industry, sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), as a multifunctional water-soluble polymer compound, has been widely used in this field, due to its excellent thickening, stabilizing, adhesive, and film-forming properties, CMC has become an important contributor to the industry’s green transformation.

1.Sizing Agents and Size Improvers

During the yarn finishing process, CMC can be used as a sizing agent to enhance the bonding force between fibers and improve weaving efficiency. It is also easy to desize,  and reduce environmental pollution. At the same time, using CMC instead of grain for sizing can make the warp yarn surface smooth, wear-resistant, and soft, thereby improving the production capacity of the loom. The sized warp yarn and cotton fabric are light in texture, not prone to deterioration or mildew, and easy to store. Since the sizing rate of CMC is lower than that of grain, desizing is not required when printing and dyeing cotton fabric.

2.Printing Paste Thickener

CMC can be used as a thickener in various textile printing pastes, boasting excellent acid and salt (electrolyte) resistance. In the printing and dyeing process, CMC is less reactive with reactive dyes, exhibits good paste yield, and is relatively stable during storage. When formulated into pastes and printing pastes, it maintains stable viscosity and exhibits excellent rheological properties. It is more suitable than sodium alginate for fine pattern printing on hydrophilic fiber textiles, achieving comparable comparable results. Therefore, it can replace sodium alginate or be compounded with it in printing pastes.

3.Application in Fabric Finishing

Fabric coated with a CMC solution for textile printing and dyeing, and subsequently treated with acetic acid can be made into special fabrics that are both breathable and waterproof. The fabric is first treated with an aqueous solution, then with a readily decomposable quaternary ammonium salt, followed by drying, polishing and heating at an appropriate stage to form a waxed fabric with an insoluble surface coating.
