The Effect of Sodium Carboxymethyl Cellulose in Wet End on Paper Quality

First, as we know, sodium carboxymethyl cellulose is a good dispersant. When we add dissolved sodium carboxymethyl cellulose into the pulp slurry, it can make paper pulp fiber and filler particle have a chemical affinity, so it increases the electronegativity of negatively charged pulp fiber and filler particles. According to the repulsion of differently charged particles, the fibers in the pulp suspension and fillers can be distributed more evenly. It mainly improves the uniformity of the paper, and it is also one of the methods to improve the strength of paper.

When sodium carboxymethyl cellulose is added into the wet end of the paper material, through the hydration of carboxymethyl and hydroxyl on the fiber, it will increase the binding force between the fibers. After a series of processing, the adhesion between the fibers can be improved, so it is the most direct method to improve the physical strength of the paper.

Sodium carboxymethyl cellulose has the function of inner sizing, on one hand to it gives the paper a certain degree of sizing, and at the same time it is also a protective colloid for gum rosin and another sizing agent so that it would help them evenly dispersed as particles on the fiber, it will retard the speed of hydrolysis of protective colloid and reduce the possibility of waste pollution of hydrolysis garbage.
Because sodium carboxymethyl cellulose is easy to make fine fiber and filler particles affinity, if the appropriate cationic additives can be chosen to be used together, it will obtain a good synergistic effect, so it will make the effect of additives more significant.
