With the improvement of prople’s living standards, there is an increasing demand for paper, leading to rapid development of paper industry. Sodium Carboxymethyl Cellulose (CMC) has superior rheological properties, good film formation, and a certain viscosity. The carboxylic groups can be closely combined with pulp fibers, and it can improve paper strength, appearance, feel, water retention and printing effect. So it has been an indispensible material in paper-making manufacturing.
CMC as wet end additive can improve the properties of paperboard. The hydrophilic carboxymethyl groups in CMC greatly improve the swelling property of cellulose, which is easy to affinity with pulp fibers and filler particles, enhancing the toughness and strength of paper. At the same time, the negative charges carried by pulp and filler repel each other, making the fibers and fillers evenly dispersed in the pulp, thus improving the uniformity of paper. This works better when the dosage is controlled in the range of 0-0.5%. And we recommend paper-making grade CMC with viscosity 100-150cps in 2% soln. and D.S. 0.8-0.9. After the addition of CMC, the tensile strength is increased by 20%-30%, the surface strength is increased by 25%-35%, and the whiteness is also improved.
CMC as surface sizing agent can increase the brightness and gloss of paper, increase the stiffness and smoothness of paper, and improve the surface strength and wear resistance of paper. CMC has good film forming properties, rheological properties and a certain water retention effect, so it can adjust the humidity of the paper, so as to improve the internal strain caused by drying of the paper. In the printing process of paper, after high temperature, there are often bad phenomena such as warping, curling, uneven color distribution, and poor ink absorption, which affect the beauty and quality of printed paper. Surface sizing can improve the surface strength of paper and is the most direct and effective way to improve the printing effect. So CMC plays an important role as surface sizing agent for printing paper manufacturing. Paper-making grade CMC with viscosity 0-20cps, 20-50cps, 50-200cps and 200-500cps in 4% soln. are recommended.
