Application of CMC in Mining Flotation Industry

Sodium Carboxymethyl Cellulose (CMC) is a highly versatile, water-soluble, and eco-friendly polymer that has become a cornerstone helper in modern mining. In industrial mining and metallurgy, chemical additives directly impact ore recovery rates and concentrate grades. CMC offers tailored chemical performance to optimize efficiency and reduce environmental footprints in two critical stages of mineral processing.

1. High-Performance Pellet Binder in Iron Ore Pelletization

Pelletization is vital for converting fine iron ore concentrates into robust, spherical pellets suitable for blast furnaces. Traditional inorganic binders, such as bentonite clay, introduce unwanted silica and alumina impurities, which decrease the overall iron grade and increase slag volume during steelmaking. CMC serves as an advanced, organic alternative that maximizes metallurgical efficiency through several mechanisms:

(1) Superior Mechanical Strength: CMC forms a robust polymer network that binds iron ore fines together. This significantly improves the green pellet dropping number and green compressive strength. Upon high-temperature induration, it maintains structural integrity, preventing pellets from disintegrating during harsh transport and handling.

(2) Maximizing Pellet Grade: Because CMC is a pure organic compound, it burns out completely during the roasting stage, leaving virtually no chemical residue. This completely eliminates the introduction of gangue impurities, thereby maximizing the total iron (Fe) percentage in the finished pellets and cutting coke consumption in blast furnaces. (3) Controlled Moisture Retention: CMC’s excellent water-retention capacity regulates the evaporation rate during drying. This prevents internal steam build-up, eliminating cracks or surface bursting while ensuring uniform porosity for better metallurgical reducibility.

2. Selective Flotation Depressant for Complex Sulfide Ores

In froth flotation, the precise separation of valuable metal sulfides (such as nickel, copper, and platinum group metals) from worthless gangue minerals is crucial. Naturally hydrophobic magnesium-bearing silicates, such as talc and serpentine, easily attach to air bubbles and contaminate the froth. CMC functions as a highly selective depressant to solve this issue through targeted surface modification:

(1) Targeted Hydrophilization: The polymer backbone of CMC adsorbs tightly onto the surfaces of silicate gangue through hydrogen bonding. Once attached, its heavily hydrophilic carboxymethyl groups point outward into the aqueous phase. This completely transforms the gangue surface from hydrophobic to hydrophilic, forcing it to stay in the pulp as tailings.

(2) Enhancing Concentrate Grade: By successfully suppressing problematic talc and serpentine, CMC prevents the dilution of valuable minerals. This ensures a dramatic boost in the target metal concentrate grade, making downstream smelting significantly easier and more cost-effective.

(3) Eco-Friendly and Adaptable: Unlike highly toxic traditional depressants like cyanide, CMC is biodegradable, non-toxic, and safe for regional ecosystems. Furthermore, it maintains high performance across wide pH ranges and tolerates recycled process water exceptionally well.
