The Effect of CMC on Paper and Paint

As an excellent chemical additive, Sodium CMC is usually used as a stabilizer and water reaming agent in industrial application, especially in the paper industry and paint industry, and its role is very important.


In paint application, CMC can be used as thickener, stabilizer and dispersant due to its excellent characteristics, especially substitution, acid resistance, salt resistance and heat resistance. It can be well dissolved in water or organic solvents and is very compatible.

Paint is normally divided into ordinary paint, latex paint, casting paint and special paint. CMC property can effectively improve the performance of various paint products. For example, as a thickener, it can make ordinary paint quality uniform, let the product reach the ideal viscosity request, avoid serious delamination phenomenon during storage, and it can also improve the thickening efficiency of latex paint. As a stabilizer, CMC can effectively prevent the paint layer separation due to the temperature change, improve water resistance and the uniformity and durability of the film, but also can make the paint leveling better, improve the paint construction effect, so that the color of the paint is more evenly dispersed, so that it has a more excellent color adhesion effect.


In paper making industry, adding CMC to the wet end of paper making can effectively improve the bond of pulp fibers and improve the uniformity and strength of paper. It can effectively reduce the loss of fillers and fine fibers, and improve the drainage performance of pulp. CMC used for surface sizing can prevent the paper from curling or brittle, improve the surface strength and smoothness, and improve paper’s absorption of ink and high quality. Besides, it can also prevent the migration of water-soluble adhesives, improve rheology, and improve the leveling effect of pigments.
